Opportunities

Volunteers are vital to the ecological integrity of Nahant Marsh, and help is always needed! Volunteer opportunities include helping out with education programs and special events, assisting the natural resources team, and more!

  • Animal Care Assistant

    Description: This volunteer position assists the Animal Caretaker, Maddie, with feeding the animal ambassadors (snakes, turtles, and frogs), cleaning enclosures, and providing enrichment.


    Hours of Position: 12:30-3:30 pm on Tuesdays


    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Prepare animal meals (e.g., chopping, blending, sorting food)
    • Clean animal enclosures and decor
    • Transfer animals from enclosures to feeding spaces
    • Provide animal enrichment (e.g., hold or walk animals)
    • Clean feeding equipment

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Not afraid of snakes, turtles, frogs, worms, or mice
    • Ability to wash dishes, prepare food, and clean materials

    Qualifications:

    • Completion of the Volunteer Orientation video
    • Pass a criminal background check

    Other Information:

    • Under the age of 16, we do ask for parental supervision, unless otherwise specified. 
    • Need to be able to carry 30 lbs and stand for long periods of time.  
    • Clothes that can get dirty.

  • Bird Survey Volunteer

    Description: This volunteer position is responsible for surveying and recording the number of individuals and species of birds at set locations around Nahant Marsh.


    Hours of Position: Two hours beginning within an hour of Sunrise, on Saturdays


    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Spend 10 minutes at each of the five sites recording the number of individuals of each species observed

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Knowledge of local bird species
    • Ability to correctly identify local bird species
    • Ability to identify birds by their call is preferred
    • Ability to access survey sites and record observations

    Qualifications:

    • Completion of the Volunteer Orientation video
    • At least one Bird Count session with an experienced Bird Counter

    Other Information:

    • Will be constantly walking and writing throughout survey
    • 18+ age requirement and will need a vehicle due to driving to survey sites

  • Docent

    Description: This volunteer position is responsible for greeting visitors, staffing the building, and keeping the education center looking beautiful. Docents may also be asked to help with other projects on occasion.


    Hours of Position:

    • Saturdays 9am-Noon and 1-3pm (seasonal hours)
    • Tuesday - Friday 9am-2pm

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Greet and interact with visitors
    • Provide information about the Marsh & upcoming programs 
    • Sell merchandise
    • Clean/tidy the Education Center
    • Assist with program preparation tasks and other docent projects

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Belief in Nahant Marsh’s mission & an appreciation of the outdoors
    • Ability to engage visitors with a friendly & enthusiastic attitude
    • Familiarity with Nahant Marsh programs, services, history, and opportunities

    Qualifications:

    • Completion of the Volunteer Orientation video
    • Completion of Docent Training with the Volunteer Coordinator (includes two docent sessions with a mentoring docent)
    • Pass a criminal background check

    Other Information:

    • Sedentary to moderate work, approximately 90% time indoors
    • 18+ age requirement

  • Educational Program Assistant

    Description: This volunteer position assists Nahant Marsh staff in providing program activities, managing students, and greeting visitors.  


    Hours of Position: Between 8am - 5pm on weekdays & various Saturdays during operating hours


    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Help setup programs and activities
    • Assist in facilitating crafts, games, and activities

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Support for Nahant Marsh’s mission & and appreciation for the outdoors
    • Ability to engage with children in a patient, kind, and positive manner
    • Ability to perform a variety of tasks outside in various weather conditions

    Qualifications:

    • Completion of the Volunteer Orientation video
    • Pass a criminal background check
    • Preferred experience with children

    Other Information:

    • Moderate work, must be able to stand and walk around for long periods of time (3-5 hours) and be comfortable in different weather climates 
    • Clothing and show wear that can get dirty and is appropriate for a variety of environmental conditions 
    • 18+ age requirement

  • Natural Resource Volunteer

    Description: This volunteer position aids in restoration efforts, which may include trash pickup, invasive species removal, trail maintenance, gardening, construction projects, seed harvesting, etc.


    Hours of Position: Time varies based on project/task


    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Pickup trash around the Marsh properties
    • Remove invasive species using various tools (e.g., shovels, trowels, loppers)
    • Assist with construction and preserve maintenance
    • Remove debris from trails
    • Weed flower beds around the building
    • Collect, harvest, and sort seeds from native plants
    • Plant trees, shrubs, and other native plants

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Knowledge of or willingness to learn natural resource management practices
    • Ability to work outside in a variety of environments and weather conditions
    • Respect for and adherence to safety protocols
    • Ability to identify native plants/ willingness to learn

    Qualifications:

    • Completion of the Volunteer Orientation video

    Other Information:

    • Moderate to heavy-duty work, most time spent outdoors
    • Can stand, walk, and bend over freely 
    • Open to ages 14+
    • Wearing weather and outdoor-appropriate clothing
    • With outdoor jobs, sunscreen, and bug spray are recommended

  • Event Volunteer

    Description: This volunteer position helps at special events hosted by Nahant Marsh, such as the Valentine’s Day Lantern Hike, Spring Celebration, Monarch Release Party, and Fall Festival.


    Hours of Position: Time varies based on event


    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Help set up activities, decor, etc
    • Staff event stations, such as check-in, plant giveaways, bake sales, crafts, and more.
    • Provide information about the event and Nahant Marsh
    • Help clean after the event

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Belief in Nahant Marsh’s mission and an appreciation of the outdoors
    • Ability to positively engage with the public
    • Ability to perform a variety of tasks outside in various weather conditions

    Qualifications:

    • Experience with marketing, fundraising, gift soliciting, and event planning
    • Completion of the Volunteer Orientation video
    • Pass a criminal background check

    Other Information:

    • Moderate work, time indoors varies with events
    • 18+ age requirement

  • Snack Steward

    Description: This volunteer position will help either make or provide baked goods, trail mixes, and snacks for summer camps and events.


    Hours of Position: Time varies based on event


    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Bring or bake a variety of snacks for Nahant events when sign-up comes around
    • Label each item with ingredients for allergens 
    • Drop off according to the event date

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Belief in Nahant Marsh’s mission and an appreciation of the outdoors
    • Baking and cooking skills 

    Qualifications:

    • Completion of the Volunteer Orientation video
    • Pass a criminal background check

    Other Information:

    • Moderate work, time indoors varies with events
    • 18+ age requirement to provide snacks
