  • Research Intern (EARTh)

    LOCATION: Nahant Marsh Education Center, 4220 Wapello Ave, Davenport, IA 52802


    REPORTS TO: Research Coordinator 


    HOURS OF POSITION: The Intern will work 24 hours per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30am-4:30pm for up to 13 weeks during the summer. Occasional evening or Saturday work may be necessary depending on the student’s project. Research internships may be extended on a case by case basis. 


    SALARY: $17/hour

    GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: 

    • Get dirty and gain hands-on experience performing research.

    • Contribute to ongoing research projects or submit project ideas of your own.

    • Research includes monitoring populations of turtles, bats, and birds; telemetry and GPS tracking studies of endangered species; native prairie and pollinator surveys; water quality; and more.

    • Collect data and create a poster to communicate your results.

    • Improve your skills reading and writing scientific literature.

    • Include your research experience on your resume.

    • Potential college credit may be available.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Student must be enrolled at a two-year community or tribal college and majoring in STEM (Science, Math, Engineering, or Mathematics). High school seniors or four-year college students who are enrolled in at least one course at a two-year institution may also apply. College GPA must be 2.5 or greater.

Occasional evening or Saturday work may be necessary depending on the student’s project. Research internships may be extended on a case by case basis. 


    SALARY: $16/hour

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    Graduating high school seniors and current college students that meet the following criteria may apply:

    • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

    • Minimum college GPA of 2.5 or high school GPA of 2.7

    • Major in a STEM discipline

    • Member of an underrepresented group, including Black or African-Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Native Pacific Islander.

  • AmeriCorps 4-H Summer Environmental Educator

    We are seeking a highly motivated and outgoing person with a background in youth services, natural resources, biology, parks and recreation, or community organizing, administration, or communications. As an AmeriCoprs Summer Educator serving at Nahant Marsh Education Center you are a part of a statewide service network that brings exciting and educational experience to all Iowa Youth!


    Term Enrollment and Completion Dates: May 15-August 30, 2025


    Term: The member will serve a minimum of 300 hours during the term. Upon completion of the hours, members will receive an education award of $1,565,08. Hours must be completed by the end of the term. 


    Hours are typically Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm with occasional Saturdays, and evenings. The member will serve approx. 25-30 hours per week. 


    Living Stipend: $3,932 to be distributed bi-weekly over the term of service. 


    Under the supervision and guidance of the host-site supervisor, members will:

    • Develop new program activities for public programs that target youth and families 
    • Deliver new interactive nature-based activities for outreach programs like expos and fairs.
    • Coordinate with the staff naturalists and AmeriCorps members to plan and conduct summer day camps. 
    • Assist with education center maintenance. 
    • Engage with visitors to the education center and provide interpretation on the Center’s displays, trails, and amenities. 
    • Receive hands-on training and participate in professional development.

    Education and Experience Requirements:

    • Education and experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field
    • First AID/CPR Certification (can be obtained)

    Eligibility Criteria:

    •  Certify that they have or will obtain the diploma/GED 
    • Be 17 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit)
    • Have reliable transportation
    • Pass a national service criminal history check prior to the first day of service
    • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident
