Breakfast Nature Club

Event Description:

Learn the secret life of Iowa’s wildlife during this monthly class at Nahant Marsh. Each month we will explore the characteristics and adaptations of a group of local flora and fauna.

A continental breakfast included in the fee. Feel free to bring your own coffee mug or travel container. Participants are encouraged to join in a “coffee talk” after and share stories of wildlife encounters and anything nature related.

  • February 1 – Freshwater Mussels: Mussels are the most endangered species in the U.S. Learn about the adaptations, diets, life cycle, and history of these shelled creatures. Mussel shells will be shown and participants will learn to identify common species.
  • March 1 – Phenology: Learn how to create a “nature calendar”. The presentation will give an overview of the science of phenology, provide examples, and discuss how phenological analyses can be gathered and used at the Nahant Marsh to increase our understanding of the marsh ecosystem. The program is being presented by Ray Wolf, Science and Operations Officer at the National Weather Service.
  • April 6 – Student Research at Nahant: Hear about student research projects that have been conducted at Nahant Marsh. This past fall, freshmen from St. Ambrose University researched topics ranging from pollinator behavior to noise pollution. Join us for breakfast and see what the students discovered. Due to likely flooding of Wapello Avenue, the April BNC presentation will not take place at the Nahant Marsh Education Center. Instead, join us at Scott Community College’s Urban Campus. The address is 101 W 3rd St, Davenport, IA 52801 and the program will be held in room URB W 116/117.
  • May 3 – Turtles of Iowa: Learn about the local turtle species that live in Iowa and why these cold-blooded creatures are an important part of the ecosystem.
