Introduction to Woodland Sedges of the Quad Cities Region
Instructor: Grant Fessler
The genus Carex (Sedges) is one of the largest genera of vascular plants in North America, totalling almost 500 species. These plants are important components of grassland, wetland, and woodland ecosystems throughout the continent, but to many of us, they remain unknown. During this 1-day workshop, participants will be introduced to the diverse world of woodland sedges native to the Quad Cities region. We will explore their morphology, ecology, and learn how to identify them. Then with our new knowledge, we will visit local woodlands and get to know them in the field. All experience levels are welcome, though this class is intended for beginners and those looking to brush up on their sedge ID skills.
The morning will be spent at Nahant Marsh Education Center’s classroom. Please bring a lunch to eat before heading out into the field. Participants will drive from Nahant to a local field trip location in the afternoon.
