About Us

Mission: The mission of Nahant Marsh Education Center is to protect, enhance, and restore the Marsh through education, research, and conservation. 
 
Vision: Our vision is to foster wonder, appreciation, and stewardship of the natural world.

Hours: The Education Center is open Monday – Friday 8:30-4:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m.-Noon (extended to 3 p.m. during the summer months). There is no fee to visit the Education Center, but donations are appreciated. Trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. If the main gate is locked, trails are accessible from the front parking lot. Look for the opening in the fence near the kiosk.

Education: Nahant Marsh Education Center through Eastern Iowa Community Colleges offers a wide variety of environmental education programming for:

Ecology: Nahant Marsh is home to over 150 species of birds; more than 400 species of plants; and a wide variety of mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects, including several rare and endangered species The trails, dock, and bird blind at Nahant Marsh allow you to experience different habitats including:

  • Vernal pond

Recreation: Nahant Marsh is a great place to explore wildlife and learn about the flora that once covered much of the landscape in Iowa. As a preserve, we allow low-impact recreation activities such as:

  • Wildlife and landscape photography
  • Hiking
  • Snowshoeing, and cross country skiing on trails
  • Picnicking
  • Biking on paved surfaces
  • Adventure packs – These packs are filled with nature guides, nets, and seasonal self-lead activities. See staff to check one out.
